New England Autumn

By Mimi Herrmann

At last, New England Autumn, like Autumns long ago
With all your radiant magic, each year you come and go
Somehow I can't imagine you'll be here when I'm gone
The same New England Autumn I've loved all along.

Swirling leaves around me, all yellow, brown, and red
A cool fall breeze is blowing like the dreams inside my head.
All year I've waited for you, as I did so oft before
And though we may not meet again I'll love you evermore.

At last, New England Autumn, the best time that I've known
The wind is mad with flying leaves, the trees stand bare as bone
Because I would not come to you, you came once more to me
A last New England Autumn, in its entirety.

You've given me the courage to deal with my distress
And so though I am leaving, I do not love you less.
Though Autumn may be ending, you're Autumn in my heart
All brown and red and golden the while we are apart.

A last New England Autumn, the loveliest I've seen
The answer to the promise of Summer's golden sheen.
Mere words in song cannot express the things you mean to me,
The last New England Autumn I shall ever see.

Alas, New England Autumn, the things we love must end
But still, to seal the promise, this song to you I send.
