In the Dark of the Moon

By Mimi Herrmann

In the dark of the moon
Can you hear them calling?
In the dark of the moon
As the night is falling
Hear their tread on the grass
As they walk all laden
Do not look as they pass --
Turn aside, fair maiden.

By the sheen of the stars
You can see them wand'ring
First from near, then afar
With their songs responding
Through the mist, on the lea,
O'er the path less traveled
In the cross 'neath a tree
Dreams become unraveled.

In the light of the sun
You believe it safer
You're deceived, foolish one:
Can you hear their laughter?
By the moon's waning light
You can see them coming
With their songs and their pipes
And their dark drums drumming.
