So what's your real name?

Do you mean my legal name? It's Mary Ursula Herrmann. "Mary Ursula" is actually meant to be my first name, but I've given up on having it treated that way, so I just use "Ursula" as my middle name.

My mother actually wanted to name me "Ursula" (dunno what she intended for a middle name; perhaps I should ask her), but my father's sisters protested long and loud and got her to tack the "Mary" on in front, with the result that I get called "Mary" a lot. Since I don't consider "Mary" my name, I pretty much don't answer to it, but the whole damn thing has caused me a hell of a lot of stress. If I'd been smart, I would have just used "Ursula" from childhood on ("M. Ursula" or something), but I wasn't smart. So, I use nicknames.

How is "Lothie" pronounced?

Like "Law-thy", not like "Low-thy". It's not really so much a circumflex o as a clipped long o, but there you are. Pretend you're British when you're saying it and you'll be spot on.

So why are you called that?

My dear friend Orny gave me the name. We were in a Tolkien club together and most of us had "Tolkien names"; mine was Lothiriel-Niniel. Naturally, it needed to be shortened drastically. Much later, Orny was the person who introduced me to the 'Net, so I used that name.

Uh, ok, sure. So do you prefer to be called Lothie or Mimi?

It doesn't matter, seriously. People seem to think that it means they're a really intimate friend of mine if they habitually call me Mimi, as opposed to Lothie, and I think this is amusing because it's not true. I might blink a little if I notice you're calling me both randomly, but even then, no big.
